Avast me hearties, May 30 is Staff Day at the University of Missouri-Rolla.
This year’s pirate-themed event is designed to recognize the hundreds of support personnel who keep the university running. Festivities will begin at 9 a.m. with an awards ceremony in the St. Pat’s Ballroom of the Havener Center on campus. Nine UMR employees, in five categories, will be honored for their contributions to the campus and will receive a certificate and a $600 check from Chancellor John Carney.
Games, karaoke and other entertainment will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Havener Center and on the Havener Center Plaza. Free shaved ice and popcorn will be available during this time.
Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Havener Center food court and cafeteria. Staff members can pick up their free lunch tickets, provided by the chancellor, at the door May 30. Non-staff members can purchase lunch tickets at the door. The luncheon’s menu will include chicken breast, pulled pork sandwiches, veggie-burgers, fresh fruit tray, baked beans, hashbrown casserole, veggie tray, cookie variety, tea and soda.
The annual pie auction and prize and raffle drawings will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Havener Center. Roger Parsons, construction manager of physical facilities at UMR, will serve as the auctioneer. During the auction, UMR Staff Council will announce the winners of the prize and raffle drawings. This year’s raffle items include a 27-inch television and home theater system, a Kodak digital camera (6.1 MP), a seven-piece patio set, a Kenmore three-burner gas grill with a side burner, a 14-volt drill and reciprocating saw, a four-person Swiss Gear tent and two Coleman sleeping bags, and four tickets to a Cardinal baseball game.
Raffle tickets are $.50 each or 12 for $5 and can be purchased from Staff Council members.
In addition, staff members can show their pirattitude – and get an extra chance to win swag – by buying a Staff Day shirt. T-shirts are selling for $7-9. Those who purchase a Staff Day shirt will be entered into a special drawing for a one-year-free parking pass on campus and a portable DVD player.
Staff members can also don their best pirate attire and compete in UMR Staff Council’s costume contest to win an iPod and a treasure basket. Costume pictures will be taken between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the UMR Bookstore. In addition, the UMR Bookstore will be offering 25 percent of all UMR items.
Staff Council will be distributing goody bags to all departments before Staff Day. Each bag also contains a pirate eye patch that departments can decorate to win bagels and coffee for their office. Decorated patches should be dropped off by noon on May 30 at Havener Center front desk for judging.
UMR Staff Day is sponsored by UMR Staff Council.
